I’m often asked by friends for advice about capturing photographs of corporate events in Sydney. The marketing manager just wants to take a few shots with their camera. What’s the best way to go about it?
Of course, it’s a perfectly valid request. Not all events are the same, not all have set a budget aside. Often the staff member has some interest and bought a nice camera, and even went on a course. For internal events like staff parties it’s probably fine. But for an external facing event, would you risk your brand image for a few hundred dollars?
This is the most common type of public event. Guests come to see speakers talk on the stage. There’s professional stage lighting. How hard could it be?
Here is an academic conference taken with a more sophisticated small point and shoot, compared to a conference professionally captured at The Ivy in Sydney CBD. Which shows off the informational nature of your event and its topics?
Which photograph do you think will help attract guests who pay 200 a head? Which will help grow your event from 250 guests to 300 guests next year?
Here is another academic conference. Let’s focus on the guest speakers this time. You’ve selected industry leaders at the top of their fields to share their expertise to your members.
One is taken by a professionally DSLR by a staff member who was a photography enthusiast. The other is professionally captured at The Regency Darling Harbour.
Which do you think can be used on your website for promotional purposes? Which do you think will help you attract more high calibre speakers at the next event?
Focus on what’s important
Event photography is not merely documenting what’s going to happen anyway. It’s a way to create positive publicity you can use in future marketing campaigns, not only in Sydney but across Australia. Your guests will not remember the fabulous canapes unless it is triggered by photographs from the event. A good shot will create a feedback loop that will generate buzz for your next event.
